How R.H. Dana’s Dual Immersion Program Works
At R.H. Dana Elementary School, our 50/50 Spanish Dual Immersion Program provides students with the opportunity to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural in English and Spanish. Beginning in kindergarten, students learn grade-level academic content in both languages while developing the communication, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills needed for success in school and beyond.

A 50/50 Instructional Model
Students spend half of each school day learning in English and half learning in Spanish. Each day, students begin in either their English-language or Spanish-language classroom before transitioning to the other language for the remainder of the day.
During the English portion of the day, students focus on Mathematics and English Language Arts. During the Spanish portion, students learn Science, Social Studies, and Spanish Language Arts. This purposeful structure allows students to develop strong literacy skills and academic knowledge in both languages while meeting grade-level learning expectations.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Bilingual learning continues throughout the school day. During recess, lunch, and other school activities, students have meaningful opportunities to use English and Spanish in conversations with peers and bilingual staff members. These everyday interactions help students build confidence and make using both languages a natural part of their school experience.

Building Language, Learning, and Community
English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students learn side by side in a welcoming and supportive community. Through collaboration, conversation, and shared learning experiences, students gain respect for diverse cultures and perspectives.
